Description
Big Ice Perito Moreno is a physically demanding experience that allows you to explore the Perito Moreno Glacier in a profound and exclusive way. The tour combines 3 hours of trekking on the ice, a 4-hour hike through the Patagonian Andean Forest, and sailing in front of the glacier, including a toast with whiskey and ice from the glacier.
During the walk on the ice, you can admire unique formations such as blue lagoons, deep cracks, eternal sinkholes, and, occasionally, ice caves.
The excursion starts from El Calafate with hotel pick-up at 6:45 a.m., traveling 78 km to the Perito Moreno Glacier. First, there is a visit of approximately 1 hour to the glacier walkways. Then you arrive at Puerto Bajo de las Sombras, from where you sail for 20 minutes to the south coast of the lake.
Then begins a 2-hour trek through the Patagonian Andean Forest, partly on moraine, to a spectacular viewpoint. After that, crampons are put on to start the 3-hour walk on the ice, observing cracks, lagoons, sinkholes, and occasionally ice caves.
After the walk, you return along the same forest path to the boat, sailing in front of the south face of the Perito Moreno Glacier before returning to Puerto Bajo de las Sombras and then to El Calafate, arriving approximately at 7:00 p.m..
