Description
The trekking to Glaciar Ojo del Albino is one of the most intense and challenging experiences you can have in Ushuaia, designed for those seeking a true high mountain adventure at the End of the World. This excursion combines long hikes, demanding ascents, technical steps, and glacier transit, always accompanied by specialized guides. Over approximately 21 km and about 9 hours of activity, you’ll traverse lenga forests, peat bogs, Laguna Esmeralda, and rocky areas with steep slopes. Upon reaching Glaciar Ojo del Albino, you’ll take a break to enjoy the surroundings and a packed lunch.
The day begins at 8:00 AM with a transfer from your hotel in Ushuaia, where you will be picked up in vehicles along with the mountain guides to head along National Route No. 3 to the start of the trail.
Before starting the hike, the guides provide the necessary technical equipment for the safe development of the activity, including crampons, poles, and a helmet. The trek begins on a well-marked path that crosses the Fuegian forest, peat bogs, and rocky sections, leading to Laguna Esmeralda.
After this first stage, you continue along the right bank of the lagoon, advancing slowly and carefully due to the presence of fallen trees and old, abandoned beaver dams. Leaving behind the vegetation line, the route transforms into a distinctly mountainous terrain, with constant slopes where the greatest physical exertion begins. The ascent takes place between large, unstable rock blocks until reaching a natural terrace from which you get panoramic views of Laguna Esmeralda, the Sorondo mountain range, and emblematic peaks such as Mount Olivia and Mount 5 Hermanos.
From this point, the most suitable passage is sought to face the final stretch towards the Glaciar Ojo del Albino, considered the most technical sector of the excursion. Here, the guide assists the group using ropes and carabiners to overcome obstacles safely. Once on the glacier, with the imposing Rhino Towers as a backdrop, you can enjoy the landscape while sharing the packed lunch and a hot soup before starting the descent.
The return is made along the same route, crossing Laguna Esmeralda, the forest, and the peat bog again, to the point where the vehicle awaits to take you back to your hotels in Ushuaia, arriving around 6:00 PM after experiencing an unforgettable adventure.
